A Dream, a Message from my Dad, a Song…

A Dream, a Message from my Dad, a Song…

I never had a close relationship with my biological father who died three years ago (though I secretly longed for one). One night last Fall, my Dad showed up in my dream. The scene was a war-torn wasteland lined with barbed wire and scorched earth. In the dream, my father took off running when he saw me. I kept after him, and when I finally caught up, I asked my Dad if he had anything he wanted to tell me. With a most serious face he looked me in the eye and said only this: “Don’t love like me.” And then he walked away.

I woke up from the dream stirred and slightly bummed–since I was hoping for an “I always loved you” kind of warm fuzzy connection with the man I’d been craving my whole life. Still, I chewed on his words for a few days: Don’t love like me, don’t love like me, don’t love like me. Then a poem came rushing to my pen with a clear message from my father to me. I turned the poem into a song. This felt especially right, since my Dad was a passionate musician.

When I feel my heart building walls (which has always been my survival default mode), I try to remember his cautionary words to me in the dream (and this song). I pray to make a new choice and stay open to love.

Here is my raw song with the message from my Dad: Don’t Love Like Me…
